01Overview
Understanding GST return filing in India
Online GST return filing helps businesses meet their Goods and Services Tax compliance obligations by reporting sales, purchases, tax liability, and eligible input tax credit through the GST portal. Depending on the business type and applicable GST scheme, returns may need to be filed monthly, quarterly, or annually.
A GST return is a statement filed by a registered taxpayer with the tax authorities to report relevant business transactions and tax-related information for a specified period. The type of return and filing frequency depend on the taxpayer's registration category, turnover, business activities, and eligibility for specific GST schemes.
Accurate GST return filing is important for maintaining tax records, reconciling business transactions, and reducing the risk of late fees and compliance issues. Businesses must identify the returns applicable to their GST registration category and follow the prescribed filing deadlines.
02Return Types
Common types of GST returns
| Return | What it covers |
|---|---|
| GSTR-1 | Reports details of outward supplies, subject to applicable filing requirements. |
| GSTR-3B | A summary return used to report GST liability and eligible input tax credit. |
| GSTR-4 | Applicable to eligible taxpayers under the composition scheme. |
| GSTR-9 | Annual return for taxpayers required to file it under the applicable provisions. |
| GSTR-9C | Reconciliation statement applicable to specified taxpayers under the prevailing rules. |
| GSTR-2A | An auto-drafted statement of inward supply information used for reconciliation; it is not a return that taxpayers ordinarily file. |
03What It Contains
What information does a GST return contain?
A GST return may include the following details, depending on the return type:
- Purchases: Details of inward supplies received by the business, where required to be reported.
- Sales: Records of outward supplies made during the relevant tax period.
- Output GST: GST liability arising from taxable sales and other applicable transactions.
- Input Tax Credit (ITC): Eligible GST credit on business purchases and expenses, subject to the applicable conditions.
- Tax payments: Details of tax paid or payable through the prescribed mechanisms.
- Adjustments and amendments: Relevant corrections, credit notes, debit notes, and other prescribed adjustments.
04Why File on Time
Why is timely GST return filing important?
Filing the applicable GST returns accurately and within the prescribed deadlines helps businesses:
- Maintain compliance with GST requirements.
- Report sales, purchases, and tax liability correctly.
- Reconcile eligible input tax credit with relevant records.
- Reduce the risk of late fees, interest, and other compliance consequences.
- Maintain organised financial and tax records.
- Manage recurring tax reporting obligations more efficiently.
05Who Files
Who is required to file GST returns in India?
GST return filing is a compliance requirement for registered taxpayers, subject to the return types, exemptions, and filing rules applicable to their registration category. The filing frequency depends on turnover, registration scheme, and the nature of business activities, and the exact obligations depend on the taxpayer's registration category.
Regular GST-registered taxpayers
Regular taxpayers file the returns applicable to their registration, commonly GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-9 where applicable. Eligible taxpayers generally file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B monthly, unless they qualify for and opt into an alternative filing frequency, such as the QRMP scheme.
Taxpayers under the QRMP scheme
The Quarterly Return Monthly Payment (QRMP) scheme allows eligible taxpayers with aggregate annual turnover of up to ₹5 crore to file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B quarterly while paying tax monthly. The Invoice Furnishing Facility (IFF) may be used for eligible B2B invoices in the first two months of a quarter.
Composition scheme taxpayers
Eligible businesses under the GST Composition Scheme generally submit CMP-08 statements quarterly to report self-assessed tax and file GSTR-4 annually, subject to the applicable rules. They generally cannot claim input tax credit.
Other categories of registered persons
Non-resident taxable persons, Input Service Distributors (ISDs), e-commerce operators required to report applicable transactions, and taxpayers required to file special returns have their own return or statement requirements.
06Filing Online
What is online GST return filing?
Online GST return filing is the process of preparing and submitting the applicable GST returns electronically through the official GST portal. Businesses can file returns themselves or seek assistance from accountants and tax professionals.
Professional assistance may help businesses organise invoices, reconcile sales and purchase records, review eligible input tax credit, and identify discrepancies before submission. However, the accuracy of the return depends on the completeness of the underlying records and the applicable GST rules.
