01Overview
What counts as a design under the Designs Act, 2000?
Whether you are a manufacturer, product designer, startup, or established business, registering an eligible industrial design can help protect the visual features that make your product distinctive. Design registration in India is governed by the Designs Act, 2000, and the Designs Rules, 2001, as amended.
Under the Act, a design generally refers to features such as the shape, configuration, pattern, ornamentation, or composition of lines or colours applied to an article. These features must be judged solely by the eye and must satisfy the applicable legal requirements for registration.
Design registration focuses on the visual appearance of a product rather than its technical operation or functional principle. The design should be new or original, and prior public disclosure may affect its eligibility for protection.
02What qualifies
What can be protected through design registration?
Eligible industrial designs may relate to products used in different industries, including:

Furniture and home products
Visual designs of eligible furniture, lighting products, and household articles.
